![]() Biloxi Plans Katrina Observances From: City of Biloxi Vincent Creel Filed 8/28/08 GCN Here is a roundup of information regarding observances planned in Biloxi for Aug. 29, the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. City memorial: The City of Biloxi will conduct a memorial observance to mark the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on the Town Green, near the Katrina memorial, on Friday, Aug. 29 at 8 a.m. The 30-minute ceremony will feature an opening prayer by Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi, along with prayers delivered by local clergy members, and the reading of Katrina victims in Biloxi by students from Biloxi and St. Patrick high schools. Rodi will deliver the opening prayer in the 30-minute multi-denominational observance and will be joined by a half-dozen other clergy members and the choir of Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church. Students from Biloxi and St. Patrick high schools will read the names of the 51 identified victims of Katrina in Biloxi. Others scheduled to offer prayers during the ceremony: Pastor Harold Roberts of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Pastor Eric Dickey of First Missionary Baptist Church, Lori Beth Susman of Temple Beth Israel, Pastor Lindsey Robinson of St. Paul United Methodist Church and Pastor Argile Smith of First Baptist Church of Biloxi. East Biloxi walk: The Catholic churches of east Biloxi will stage a Katrina Walk again this year to mark the third anniversary of the storm. The 6 p.m. walk will begin at Our Mothers of Sorrows Catholic Church on Division Street and will follow a route that includes Blessed Francis Seelos Catholic Church, Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church and ending at St. Michael Catholic Church. A decade of the Rosary will be prayed at each church. Transportation will be provided to those unable to walk the route. Details: 435-0007. ’Katrina & Biloxi’: The City of Biloxi and Cable One, as part of continuing outreach efforts to educate residents about the dangers of storms and flooding, will once again air the award-winning documentary “Katrina & Biloxi” on Aug. 29 at 8:30 a.m., 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Cable 13. Biloxi Bay Bridge Walk and Canned Food drive: Residents are encouraged to join VIPs and elected officials in walking the bridge anytime during the day.
