Gilich: Eyes will be on Biloxi this week

"The entire country will be watching us and how we handle this," Mayor Andrew "FoFo" Gilich said today after the Mississippi Gaming Commission unveiled guidelines to re-open the state's casinos, including eight in Biloxi, which have been closed since for two months.

"There are national implications to how we do this," Gilich said, "and it's going to be up to the operators, the staff and the guests to make sure that we do it right, that we follow the guidelines and don't have a misstep."

The Gaming Commission, which closed casinos on March 16 because of the coronavirus threat, today issued "Phase One Casino Opening Guidelines," which limit capacity to 50 percent, with guests facing a battery of health questions before entering casinos, and six-foot distances required between players.

Additionally, entertainment, special events and promotions will be suspended, the commission says, and VIP areas and poker rooms will remain closed.

"Everyone's watching to see how this will work," Gilich said. "It's a buyer's market for Biloxi and Mississippi if it's done right, and everyone does the responsible thing."
