MEMA Asks Residents to Prepare for Tropical Storm Fay and Possible Flooding

GCN   8/23/08

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties based upon the current forecast track of Tropical Storm Fay.  Along with the Tropical Storm Warning a Flash Flood Watch has also been issued for areas south of Highway 82.[Image of 3-day forecast, and coastal areas under a warning or a watch]

Fay is expected to move slowly along the Mississippi Gulf Coast over the next several days and could bring with it torrential rains causing major coastal and inland flooding to much of the state.

Residents who live in low-lying areas, mobile homes, Mississippi Cottages or sub-standard housing are urged to prepare for the possibility of flooding due to this current forecast.  Although no evacuations have been ordered and no shelters have been opened residents are urged to have an evacuation plan in place and if possible to make arrangements to stay on higher ground with friends or family.  Residents should also have an emergency kit fully stocked with the following items.

  • Flashlight and battery-powered radio with extra batteries.
  • Canned and non-perishable food.
  • Bottled water.
  • Toiletry items.
  • Pet food and pet supplies.
  • Medicine and prescription medication.
  • Copies of important family papers and documents.
  • Cash.

Residents should stay tuned to local media stations for the latest storm predictions.

MEMA will continue to release updated information about Tropical Storm Fay and preparations.
