Hurricane Preparedness Week for Mississippi

From:  News Release   5/6/19   GCN

PEARL To ensure residents are prepared for the upcoming tropical weather season, Governor Phil Bryant has declared May 6-10 as Hurricane Preparedness Week in Mississippi.

In September of last year, Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This marked the second straight year a tropical system has affected the state.

“Because of the excellent preparedness of residents and visitors, as well as state and local government, there were no deaths or injuries,” said Bryant in his proclamation for Hurricane Preparedness Week.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will provide valuable preparedness information during these five days for citizens and businesses. It will be found on the MEMA website and on the social media platforms Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

“Your government is prepared to respond, but the first level of preparedness starts with you,” said MEMA Executive Director Greg Michel. “Make sure that you get your family ready now. Know where you will go and what supplies you will need to take with you. Prepare for days, perhaps weeks without electricity after the storm passes.”

The Atlantic Hurricane Season officially starts June 1 and runs through November 30.

Throughout the week, MEMA will focus on the following preparedness tips:

  • Tuesday – Family Emergency Plan
  • Wednesday – Flood Insurance and Financial Planning
  • Thursday – Pet Preparedness
  • Friday – Social Media

MEMA and various state agencies are also hosting their annual Partners in Preparedness Summit at the Imperial Palace Casino and Resort this week from May 6-9. The Summit will include multiple sessions on hurricanes.
