College Student From Biloxi Accused of Wire Fraud

From: AG News Release   Filed 9/18/08  GCN

Jackson, Miss.- Attorney General Jim Hood today announced the arrest of a Mississippi College student on two counts of wire fraud.

Jake Marshall ,age 23, of Biloxi, Miss., is accused of compromising  a Bank of America Payroll account that belonged to Barbizon LLC located in Tampa, Fla. Marshall was employed by Barbizon during the summer passing out pamphlets for the modeling agency at North Park Mall.

Pam Van Sant, CFO of Barbizon LLC contacted the Attorney Generals Office when she noticed large funds missing from the payroll account. Marshall allegedly used the account number and routing number on his payroll check to pay his school tuition using Tuition Management.   Tuition Management allows students to pay by check and only requests the account number, type of account checking/savings, and the routing number. If  the account has the available funds, it will pay for tuition and disburse  the remainder to the student.

"This incident could have occurred at any school in the State of Mississippi," said Attorney General Jim Hood, "I would like to thank Mississippi College for their help throughout our investigation and in the apprehension of Mr. Marshall."

Marshall allegedly took a sum of over $100,000. He was arrested Tuesday, September 16, by investigators with the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General's office.  Marshall is being held at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond, Ms. until his  arraignment, which has not yet been scheduled.

As with all cases, the charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
