Summertime Swimming is Here; Sign Up Now, more Biloxi News

Warmer weather in Biloxi means time on the water and this weekend is full of water activities.
The Biloxi Aquatics Division opens registration for is summer swimming lessons and swim team on Saturday morning.

From 8 a.m. to noon at the Biloxi Natatorium on Father Ryan Avenue, Biloxi residents can sign up their children or even themselves for one of the many summer swimming lessons soon to be available at the Olympic-size swimming pool.

Lessons are open to ages six months to adults at various morning and evening hours. Each session is held Monday through Thursday for two weeks at 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30 a.m. and 5:45 and 6:45 p.m.

The two-week sessions begin Monday, June 4 and fees for each session are $30 for Biloxi residents and $50 for non-Biloxi residents.

Late registration and non-Biloxi resident registration will begin on Monday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and continue throughout the summer until all classes are full.

The aquatics division will also be holding registration for Biloxi Red Tide, the summer swim team, open to ages 18 and younger who can swim 25 yards efficiently. Fees are $30 for one child, $50 for two children, $75 for three, and $90 for four or more. Non-Biloxi resident registration is $50 per child.

Also on Saturday, Mayors Andrew "FoFo" Gilich of Biloxi and Rusty Quave of D'Iberville ("the hoss from across") will participate in the Great Biloxi Schooner Mayors Cup.

At noon from the Schooner Pier, Gilich and Quave will captain the schooners Mike Sekul and Glenn L. Swetman, respectively, and travel westward in the Biloxi channel past the Biloxi Lighthouse and back to the pier. An after-party will be held at the Schooner Pier with fish plates, a cash bar, and entertainment by Michael Halat.

Elsewhere this weekend: First Friday will be held in Downtown Biloxi, the annual Gorenflo's Cobia Tournament will be at the Point Cadet Marina, and the Biloxi Shuckers will continue their homestand against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp with a fireworks show tonight, team photo giveaways on Saturday, and Military Salute Sunday where the Shuckers will dress in special military-themed jerseys. Over at the casinos, Alanis Morissette will perform at the Beau Rivage, and Boz Scaggs will be at the IP Casino.

News and notes: Preservation in May, Council

"Northside" Cemetery Tour: The first event of the 11th Annual Preservation in May was held Thursday evening in the Old Biloxi Cemetery with a cemetery tour north of Irish Hill. The Clay, Dosett, and Ellis families were showcased. To see images from the event, click here.
